190.1b Michael BROTEMARKLE  b. 1793/99, Allegany Co., MD, s/o Christopher and Elizabeth (YEASLEY) BOTEMARKLE (190.1), d. Allegany Co., MD, m. Susannah RICE, b. c1809, d. 27 Oct 1886, age 77y, in Lonanconing at home of daughter Mrs. William B. MCFALLAND. . PA. Michael purchased the homeplace after the death of his father, Christopher, and lived there the rest of his life. He was locally famous in the day as a wagoner on the National Pike. Either Michael or Michael Jr., below, was a trustee in Election Districk No. 4, Pleasant Grove School, No. 3, between 1865 and 1881. In 1850 through 1880 Michael was farming in Allegany Co., MD. In 1870 sarah Brant, age 10, b. IA, was in the household. In 1880 Albert BROTEMARKLE 12, a ranson and Ellen Shields, a servant were in the home. They are bur. at BROTEMARKLE Farm, 3 miles of Cumberland, Allegany Co. (LE65MDAL3, 7, 9-10,   MDALB3, MDB4 p1355, MDNP3 20 Oct 1886) Children:

OBITUARY: 190.1b spouse Mrs. Susannah BROTEMARKLE, relict of Michael BROTEMARKLE, d. at Lonaconing on Wed. 27 Oct at the residence of a daughter, Mrs. William B. MCFARLAND, age 77y. She had been ill for only 4 days. The remains were shipped to Cumberland on the C&P RR and were interred on the BROTEMARKLE farm, 3 miles east of Cumberland, Rev. F. G. 190.1b3 John F. BROTEMARKLE, b. MD, m. 1 Jan 1862, Allegany Co., MD, Emily BOYER (or BOYLE), b. c1844, MD. There are two marriage records entries for John F. in Allegany Co., for the same day; one had Emily BOYER, and the other had Emily BOYLE. John was a farm hand. In the 1870 census, he had personal property of $100, but no real estate. (MDAL9, 15) Children:

190.1b3b Albert G. BROTEMARKLE b. c1867, Allegany Co., MD, m. 1st., 14 Apr 1897, Allegany Co., Virginia M. RICE, b. c.1872, d. prior to 1905, when Albert G. BROTEMARKLE, 30, widower, m. 2nd. 5 Aug 1905, Allegany Co., Bertha KERNS, b. c1883. In the 1900 census, Albert was a boarder enumerated with John W. Lewellyn in Lonaconing, MD.  It is possible that the first wife died prior to 1900. (MDAL11, 15)

190.1b4 Upton BROTEMARKLE, b. Dec 1839f, Allegany Co., MD, m. Margaret ____?, b. Dec 1839, MD. In 1770 through 1910 Upton was farming in Allegany Co. In 1900 Norval, wife Nora, and several children were in the home. Upton and family lived at 221 Columbia Ave, Cumberland, in 1913. . (MDAL9-12, MDALB3-4) Children:

190.1b4g Norval R. BROTEMARKLE, b. Nov 1875, Allegany Co., MD, m. 7 May 1894, Allegany Co., Nora O'NEAL, b. Dec 1871.  In the 1900 census, Norval and Nora were living with his parents, Upton and Margaret. He was an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company. He lived on 49 Dilly St. in Cumberland in 1913. The 1900 census lists 3 children, but it's very difficult to determine their true names.  (MDAL11, 15, MDALB4)

190.1b5 Sarah E. BROTEMARKLE, b. Jun 1835, Allegany Co., MD, m. 3 May 1860, Allegany Co.,  John H. VALENTINE, b. c1840, MD s/o of Daniel VALENTINE. John was a laborer or farm hand in the census records. In the 1900 census, the father, Daniel, age 84, is residing with Sarah and John. The 1900 census also indicates that they had 2 children, but that only one survived, which is William who appears in the census records from 1870 through 1900.  (MDAL9-11, 15, MDALB3) Children:

190.1b5a William VALENTINE, b. Jun 1865, probably Allegany Co., MD, m. Amanda L. ________?, b. Aug 1862, in Maryland. In the 1900 census Wiliam was a farmer, and they had 5 living children and possibly one who died. (MDAL11) Children:

190.1b7 Barbara Ellen 'Helen' BROTEMARKLE b. c1843, d. c5 Jun 1900, age 57, m. Hillary BRANT, Mineral Co., VA.. There was a Hillery BRANT living in  Ridgley, WV, across the river in Mineral Co., WV. The following obituary appeared in the Cumberland Times on 5 Feb 1907. I've included it in hopes that someone may be able to make the necessary corrections. However, I'm not sure this is the correct family, due to the name of the deceased 'B. Ellen BRANT'. There is a need for more research on this family to determine if this is in fact the correct 'Hillery' BRANT. (LE65, MDALB3, MDNP3 5 Jun 1900) Children:

Michael farmed, drove horses, and cut timber. they lived on the Barney Kilcoin Farm, overlooking Evitts Creek near its mouth. In 1880 through 1900 he was living in Allegany Co. 190.1b8c Samuel Tilden BROTEMARKLE, b. 8 Nov 1876, m. 7 Nov 1900, Allegany Co., MD, Theresa Ellen RICE b. c1874, d/o Malachi and Catherine Lydia (FLURY) RICE. Tilden, Attended Irons Mt. School, first, then Wentling School, when the family moved on to the Dr. Reed farm on Evitts Creek. He stopped school at age 15 to farm and cut timber. After his marriage he farmed for three years, the too, up modern road building, rolling macadem on the first hard surfaced road in Allegany County. Hen ten became Supreintendent under State road Commissioner  Clinton Uhr. After three years, he took, up contracting for himself. He and his wife were members of St. Paul's English Lutheran Church, and lives at Mapleside. He was a Democrat and leader in the South End of Cumberland. In the 1913 Cumberland City Directory he is listed as a foreman, living on Maple, in Mapleside. (MDAL3, MDALB3-4) Children:

190.1b8e Edith Viola BROTEMARKLE, b. c1875, m. 7 sep 1904, Allegany Co., MD, m. Ernest MCKENZIE, b. c1856, a widower. They live in Cumberland. (MDAL15, MDALB3)
