212.1a7 Eliza WITMER b. c1812/14 (1812 in Bio), d. 1899, age 86, Ogle Co., IL, d/o John and Mary A (NEWCOMER) WITMER (see 212.1a), m. 14 Feb 1832, Washington Co., MD, John HAMMER b. c1806, Washington Co. the migrated first to Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL, where John had a saddle shop. In 1833, then went to Ogle Co., IL. In 1850 they were living in Mt. Morris, Ogle Co.. In 1860 John was farming in Mt. Morris, with a John W. WITMER 25, in the household. In 1870 they were in Haldan Twp., Ogle Co., with Cassius Denner 20, a farm hand, b. in Hanover, GER in the home. In 1880 Eliza is living with her daughter Mary and husband Melchoir NEWCOMER in Mt. Morris. In 14  Sep 1883 they were present at the Old Settlers Meeting. There is also a picture of Eliza attending the 100th birthday party of Miss Kitty (FUNK) RICE (see FUNK Family 218.1h), another long time resident of Ogle Co., from Washington Co., MD. 212.1a7a Benjamin HAMMER b. 6 Jan 1833, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, m. 6 Jan 1859, Narcissa BETEBENNER b. 7  De c1839, Boonsboro, Washington Co., d/o Samuel and Rebecca (STRAUSS) BETEBENNER. Benjamin migrated to Sangamon Co., IL, with his parents, and came to Mt. Morris, Ogle Co., IL in 1842. Narcissa came to Ogle Co. with her parents in 1844. Benjamin was a farmer and in the harness and saddle business and in the grain trade. They were members of the Methodist Church, and once lived in Polo, Ogle Co. In 1870 and 1880 he was a grain dealer in Polo, Ogle Co. In 1900 he was living in Buffalo Twp. Ogle Co. (MDWAB2 p1232, ILOGB6 p735, ILOG4-6) Children:

212.1a7a2 Frank W. HAMMER b. 22 Mar 1873, IL, m. c1890 Flora SMITH b. Oct 1875, IL, d/o U___? and Vendelia SMITH of Ogle Co. In 1900 Frank was a telegraph operator living with his wife's parents in Buffalo Twp., Ogle Co.. In 1910 he is listed as a piano teacher in the 1st. Ward of Polo, Ogle Co., and in 1920 he was a teacher and his wife a musician in Buffalo Twp. The age of his wife in 1920 fits Flora, but the name is difficult to read. They do not have an children listed in any of the census records. (ILOG6-7)

212.1a7a3 Samuel HAMMER b. Aug 1863, IL, m. Margarette CAMPBELL b. Mar 1867, IL, d/o John and Elizabeth CAMPBELL. In 1900 Samuel, a salesman, and Margarette were living with her parents in Buffalo Twp., Ogle Co., IL. In 1920 he was lightning salesman living in the same township. (ILOG5, 7)

212.1a7b John Whitmore HAMMER b. c1832/34 (Sep 1832 in obituary; 14 Sep 1834 on tombstone), Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, d. 4 Oct 1902, age 68y 20d, Dixon, Lee Co., IL, at the home of D. Y. Andre, m. Ellen HESS b. 12 May 1842, MD, d. 13 Apr 1897, age 55y 1m 1d. He migrated to Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL with his parents, who later came to Ogle Co.. In 1870 he was minister living in Polo, Ogle Co. In 1880 he was a butcher in Polo. They, along with their son Charles W. are buried in Pine Creek Christian Church Cem., Ogle Co. (MDWAB1 p1232, ILOGB2, 4-5, ILOG4) Children:

212.1a7b1 Mary E. HAMMER b. Nov 1865, IL, m. c1888, Leavitt T. FAULDERS b. Sep 1864, IL, s/o Thomas and Leah (HILDEBRAND) FAULDERS of Pine Creek, Ogle Co., IL. In 1900 Leavitt was a minister in Sidel Twp., Vermillion Co., IL. According to her father's obituary in 1902, they were living in Arcola, Douglas Co., IL. In 1910 they were living in the 4th. Ward, Wellington, Sumner  Co., KS; in 1920, the 3rd. Ward, El Dorado, Butler Co., KS. (KSSU3, KSBU5, ILOGB6 p570, ILVE7) Children:

212.1a7b2 William L. HAMMER b. c1867, IL, m. 4 Jan 1888, Ogle Co., IL, Clara May FRIDLEY b. c1867, IL, d/o John and Elizabeth (HILDEBRAND) FRIDLEY of Mt. Morris, Ogle Co. (see John FRIDLEY'S obituary at USGENWEB, IL, Ogle Co). William was in Joliet, in 1902 at the time of his father's death. (ILOGB6 p246)

212.1a7b3 Cora HAMMER b. c1868, IL, m. a WOLFE. In her father's obituary she was living in Dixon, Lee Co., IL in 1902. (ILOGB2)

212.1a7b5 Bertha HAMMER b. c1872, IL, m. Arthur ANTONE. In 1900 there is a Bertha H. ANTONE b. Aug 1890, Il, a niece, living with Henry Schmitt and Theresa his wife, in Pin Oak, Madison Co., IL, possibility the child of Bertha and Arthur ANTONE. In 1902, her father's obit stated that she was living in Colorado Springs, CO. (ILMD8, ILOGB2) No more information.

212.1a7b6 Faith HAMMER b. Dec 1880, m. a BLAIR. In 1900 Faith was a servant in the home of John B. Stover in Grand Detour Twp., Ogle Co., IL. In her father's obituary was in Decatur, Morgan Co., IL in 1902. (ILOGB2, ILOG6)

212.1a7c David Harry HAMMER b. c1840, IL, m. 4 Jun 1874, Emma L. CARPENTER. In his parents bio, he was living in Chicago, Cook Co., IL. (ILOGB8 p348, MDWAB2 p1232) Children:

212.1a7e Mary Eliza HAMMER b. Jan 1843, IL, d. May 1920, Ogle Co., IL, m. 17 May 1865, Polo, Ogle Co., Melchoir S. NEWCOMER b. 28 Jan 1842, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, d. 18 Feb 1920, Ogle Co., IL, s/o Isaac and Elizabeth (EMMERT) NEWCOMER. Melchoir came to IL with his parents in 1854. In 1866 he joined the United Church of the Brethren, at West Branch, Ogle Co. In 1869 he was elected as a minister. In 1887 he became an elder at West Branch serving until 1908. He was one of the founders of Mt. Morris College in 1879, after the close of Rock Creek Seminary. In 1900 through 1920 they were living in Mt. Morris. In 1900 Ira Hahn 23, a servant was in the household. Melchoir was buried in Feb 1920, and Mary Eliza was buried in May 1920 in Plainview Cem., Ogle Co. (ILOGB9, 14 p118, 262, ILOG5-8, MDWAB2 p1229, 1232) Children:

212.1a7e9 Grace NEWCOMER b. Oct 1885, d. 1932.  became a Red Cross Nurse, went to New York on 13 Aug 1918, and overseas on 20 Sep 1918. She was buried in Feb 1932 in Plainview Cem., Ogle Co. (ILOGB14 p293)

212.1a7f George William HAMMER b. 7 Sep 1845, Ogle Co., IL, m. 3 Feb 1870, Pine Creek, Ogle Co., MD, Mary C. MILLER b. 15 Aug 1852, d/o  David F and Susan (STOVER) MILLER (natives of MD and PA respectively). In 1880 they lived in Lincoln Twp., Ogle Co. with Susan Wallace 16, a servant, and Charles Haus 25, a physician in the home. In 1910 and 1920, they were living in Buffalo Twp., Ogle Co. BAKER b. 5 Mar 1849, Pine Creek Twp., Ogle Co., d. 5 Jan 1879, age 73y, s/o James A. and Catherine (FLEMING) BAKER (natives of Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, now WV). Edward was a farmer in Pine Creek Twp., Ogle Co., until 1913. He attended Cornell College and Rock River Seminary. In 1880 through 1910 he farmed in Pine Creek, Ogle Co. He owned land from a government claim in Lincoln Twp., Ogle Co., He was Twp. Assessor 1 term and School Director several terms. (ILOGB8 p348, 11 p842, 14 p367, ILOG5-8) Children:
