172 John George WEIS b. 1721 GER, d. 1 Aug 1804, age 83y, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD (possible parents 344/345) (see also WEIS), m. (173) Eva Catharina HEYSER, b. 1731, d. 2 Aug 1804, Hagerstown, d/o Wilhelm and Ann (_____?) HEYSER (346/347). After emigrating to America, he migrated to Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, from PA, where he taught school and operated a potter business in Hagerstown and Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA. The family also operated a brick yard in Hagerstown. He was in Hagerstown as early as 1776/77 when he was private in the militia, 4th class in Capt. Michael Fackler's Company, and on 23 Oct 1776 a private in Capt. William HEISER'S Company in the continental service. Later he was a private in the militia, 8th. class, of Capt. Peter Beall's Company, 1st. Battalion. He was in Shepherdstown as early as 1780/82. In the baptism of their son Jacob Eva Catherine or Eva Christiana is referred to as Catha. On 15 Sep 1784 John George and wife sponsored George s/o Johann Peter and Susannah Herr. On 28 Jan 1789, they sponsored Johannes s/o Henry and Catherina Wingert. In Jul 1797, John George and Eva were member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. The will of Wilhelm HEYSER left the use of his plantation to John George and Catha WEIS for use in their lifetime. In the 1790 census John WEIS has 2 males under 16, 2 males over 16, and 2 females. 172.5 John Adam WEIS b. 24 Jan 1780, Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, m. Margaretha _____?. Adam a blacksmith rendered patriotic service by the committee of observation on 14 Jan 1777 and was paid for work done to a carriage of artillery in Col. Stull's Battalion. (MDWAB13 p415, 14 p1, 3) Children:

172.6 George WEIS b. 1782, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, d. 29 Apr 1857, age 82y, m. Elizabeth b. 1784, d. 20 Feb 1866, age 82y. Inn 1804 George took over the pottery business in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD, and Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA. In 1809 he was a church officer, St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Shepherdstown. On 4 Sep 1809 he bought a lot on the northwest corner of German and Duke Streets, Shepherdstown from John Boyer for 4700, known as Weis corner. On 3 Apr 1810 he was elected to the Shepherdstown Town Council. He served on the Court of Hustings from Apr 1820 to 1823, an inquiry into the incorporation of Shepherdstown. On 3 sep 1824  George bought from John Baker and Margaret, his wife, lot 147, in Shepherdstown, that Margaret Morgan got from Pricilla Morgan, and in 1826 he bought a lot from Peter Shopppert. In 1870 Upton was a hatter in Hagerstown, Washington Co.. He was a member of  St. John's Church, the I.O.O.F., and the 1st. Hose Co., of Hagerstown. In Shepherdstown in 1847 he was paid for work done in 1844/45. Catherine is buried in the Lutheran Cem., East German Street, in Shepherdstown.
