The Family of John Leonard WALTON
and Nancy Ann GRUBB TOLER
(7th. Generation)

72 John Leonard WALTON, b. c1768, Henrico Co., VA, d. bef. 11 Jan 1809, Moorefield, Hardy Co., VA, s/o John and Sarah (____) WALTON (144/145), m. ________, (73) Nancy Ann TOLER, nee GRUBS (GRUBBS), b. bef. 1775, d. bef. 14 Dec 1826, probably at Bethany, the home of her son, William C. WALTON, in Jefferson Co., VA. She m. 1st., 10 Nov 1775, Goochland Co., VA, Cornelius TOLER who probably died 1786/1787. By TOLER she had 7 children.  To date (2011) a marriage record for John WALTON and Nancy has not been located. After their marriage, John and Nancy lived for some years on the road to Richmond, VA, about 32 miles north of the city, but settled in 1805 in Moorefield, VA, where John died in 1809 at the age of 38. John had been a blacksmith and tavern keeper. They had only one son. The deed (below) settles several facts that were only speculations before: that Cornelius TOLER was indeed her first husband, and reveals the names of Nancy and Elizabeth TOLER'S husbands. The children of Nancy and Cornelius seemed to have all gone to Hardy Co.; either they were born there or Cornelius owned land there which gave the children an incentive to settle in the area. One report states that Cornelius was born in Hardy Co. in 1740. probably attributed to the Harrison Co., deed involving some of his children . At that time there were only a few families in Hardy Co. and the area was plagued by Indian raids. I think it is more likely he was born in Goochland, Hanover, or Henrico Co., VA. Hardy County History does not list any TOLERS in the county at the time. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Cornelius was in one of these counties from 1782 through 1786. On 21 May 1784 Minor Mead of Hanover sold 350 acres on Stag Creek, adjacent to Richard Winn, Cornelius TOLER, John Hicks, and John Mead. On 25 Nov 1785, he was the suretor for the marriage of John HIX and Sarah GRUBBS, d/o John GRUBBS, and on 20 Mary 1786, he was the suretor for the marriage of Charles Elmore and Mary Glenn, both marriages in Henrico Co., VA. He paid tax on 190 acres of land in Goochland from  1782 through 1786.  In 1787 Richard Johnson appears to have acquired Cornelius' property, which was resurveyed on 1 Apr 1787. On 5 Aug 1789 John Glinn and Elizabeth his wife sold to Martin Baker, Glinn's homestead of 100 acres, bounded by TOLER'S, John GRUBBS, John Winn and Peter Winn. Nancy and John WALTON may have gone to Hardy Co. because of her TOLER children. There is the possibility that this is Nancy Grubbs Toler, who after the death of her first husband, Cornelius TOLER, m. a SMITH, then m. John WALTON. The marriage date is right for John WALTON and Nancy TOLER. Their first child, William Claiborne WALTON was b. 4 Nov 1793. This may be a stretch. More research needed on this Nancy SMITH.
