254 James WALLINGFORD, b. ___?, prob. Prince George's Co., MD, d/o Benjamin and Mary (GINN) WALLINGFORD (508/509), d. bet. 10 Mar 1824 and 28 Nov 1825, Jefferson Co., VA, m.   (255) _____?. There is an obituary that states that 'Jane WALLINGFORD yesterday age 82 of this county: paper' dated 6 Aug 1829 in (WVBEB16 p56), that could possibly be the wife of James. He was in Berkeley-Frederick Co., area of Virginia as early as 1769 when he leased 169 acres of land by indenture from Jacob Hite for a term of 90 years. This land was left to his two sons, Nicholas and James, who sold it to Isaac Strider in 1826 for $990. . In 1782-1787 Tax List,  James WALLINGFORD 1 pole 0 slaves, Berkeley Co., VA. In the 1787 personal property tax list of Berkeley Co., List B, Thomas Hart, Commissioner, James WALLINGFORD was taxed for 1 white males above 16 and under 21, 7 black(s) under 16, and 9 horse, mares, colts and mules. His immediate neighbors visited before and after Joseph WALLINGFORD  on 13 May were: John Gassaway, Jacob Miller, James Tone, Henry Sydaner, Madin Sydaner, (James), Joshus Bigton, John Butt, John  Crane Sr., Leonard Davis, and Mary Dunn. . On 2 Mar 1792 James was named in the settlement of Nathan Gilbert's estate. On 11 May 1799, Sarah Hite rented land to Cornelius DuVall, adjacent to James WALLINGFORD, Dr. Henry Lee, Gen. Charles Lee, Adam Stephen, Joshua York, where John Hite Jr. deceased, dwelt on Hopewell branch of the Opequon Creek. On 25 Feb 1799, James named in the settlement of Barney McSherry, and named on the settlement of Jacob Hite on 20 Sep 1799. In the 1800 Tax List,  James WALLINGFORD 1-4, Berkeley Co., VA. From 1802-1803 he was taxed on 1 male above 16, and 3-5 horses. In 1805-1810, taxed on 2 males and from 2-4 horses. The 1810 census show James WALLINGFORD with 1 male 16 under 26; 1 male 45 and up; 1 female 0 under 10; 2 females 16 under 26. In 1811-1814, taxed 2 males  and from 3-9 horses; in 1815 1 male over 15, 4 horses, 6 cattle; 1817-1820 2 males, 2-7 horses. In  1820 James WALLINGFORD has 1 male 0 under 10; 1 male 26 under 45; 1 male 45 and up; 2 females 0 under 10; 1 female 10 and under 16; 1 female 16 and under 26 his wife must have died prior to 1810. In 1820 there are no females in his household to fit the age that his wife should have been. James does not appear on the tax records after 1824. 254.1-Nicholas WALLINGFORD, m. licenses 20 Sep 1800, 21 Sep 1800, Berkeley Co., VA, to Phebe WILLIAMS, suretor Mark WALLINGFORD, minister David Young. From the 1810 and 1820 census records, it would appear that Nicholas had at least one son, and four daughters. From his father's will, the name of the son is known as James. On 11 Oct 1826, Nicholas and Phebe, and brother James WALLINGFORD, and Hannah, his wife, sold to Isaac STRIDER for $990.00, 169 acres of land their father had leased from Jacob Hite on 1 Dec 1769 for 90 years, the land they had received from their father in the will. At sometime after 1826 Nicholas may have left Jefferson Co.(WVBE1, WVJE8-9, 21, WVJEB21 Bk14 p368) Children:

In 1860, John was farming in Summit Point, Jefferson Co., VA; in 1879 in Averell Twp. Margaret must have d. between 1860 and 1870, since she is absent in the 1870 census.
