Sun., 1 Mar 1807, Belvidere, near Charles Town, Jefferson Co., VA, m. 26 Sep 1759, Frederick Co., VA, (151) Mary MCCORMICK RILEY, b. 1736, d/o John and Ann (REDMOND?) MCCORMICK (302/303), d. 1810. Mary MCCORMICK was married previously to Dr. Fergus (or Ferril or Terrill) RIELY, who died 1757 in Frederick Co., VA, by whom she had a son, John (151.1 below). Several writer have indicated that Fergus RIELY may have died in IRE. However his will was filed in Frederick Co., VA, witnesses by John MCCORMICK, his father-in-law. Mary MCCORMICK probably migrated to VA with her father, Dr. John MCCORMICK of 'White House Farm' in Summit Point, Jefferson Co., VA, and her husband Fergus RIELY and son John. They lived at 'Belvidere', near Charles Town, which may have been the estate of his father. Magnus was an Ensign Major in the Colonial Wars, from Frederick Co., VA in 1758. He is listed as a land owner in the rent rolls of Berkeley Co., VA, 1774-1781, for 332 acres. His lands included 'Belvidere', a brick house on Washington Street in Charles Town, Jefferson Co.,, three lots on Congress and Mildred Street, Charles Town, and 400 acres in Washington Co., PA. He witnessed Hugh Stephenson's will on 20 Jul 1774, and again in 3 Mar 1776. On 13 Mar 1776 he was a bondsman for the will of Richardson Jr. He was a witness at Berkeley Court on 17 Dec 1776; and he witnesses a will for Ann Stephenson, widow of Hugh Stephenson on 15 Dec 1784. In 1787 he was on the Board of Trustees in Charles Town. Magnus in 1782-1787, paid tax on 1 pole 8 slaves in Berkeley Co., VA. In the 1787 personal property tax list of Berkeley Co., List B, Thomas Hart, Commissioner, Magnus TATE was taxed for 1 white males above 21,5 white males above 16, and under 21, 5 black(s) above 16, 13 black(s) under 16, 24 horse, mares, colts and mules. 151.1 John RIELY, b. Femanogh County, IRE, d. 5 Dec 1778, was the son of Mary MCCORMICK by her first marriage to Fergus (or Ferril) RIELY. His wife was Mary BROWN, d. 31 Mar 1802; her will dated 31 Mar 193. Four of John's son served in the American Revolution, with the exception of Alexander who was probably too young to serve. In his will, 31 Mar 1793, John RILEY named his half-brothers, John, George, Magnus, and William TATE. John lived at 'Head Spring', a farm at the head of Bullskin Run in Jefferson Co., VA. He built the house at 'Head Spring' in 1774 on 200 acres of land George Washington of Mt. Vernon leased to John REILY and sons James and Alexander, at the rate of 6 pounds due Washington on then the 12th. of Dec of each year. The least should have been in effect to 1834 when Alexander died, but Washington's death in 1799 called for a settlement of his estate and the lease ceased to exist. Court records and deeds finally concluded in 1869, deeded two tracts of land to 2 descendants of Alexander. (VAB6, WVJEB3 Dec 1957, Dec 1968) Children:
