He helped build the courthouse at Charles Town, Jefferson Co,. VA, where John Brown was tried. They were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, having joined at Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., VA. Three of his sons were in the Confederate Army. After the death of Henry, Elizabeth, in 1880, was living with her son Mathias. They are buried in Pullman-Swisher Cemetery, Saline Co., MO. All the children were b. in Berkeley Co., VA. During the Civil War, he joined Marmaduke's Company, the first company organized in the county. He was captured at Blackwater, 19 Dec 1861. Hew was taken to St. Louis, then to Alton, IL, where he swore allegiance to the United States in 1862, and was sent home. He later joined Shelby's Command and remained in service until the end of the war. He move to Marshall, Saline Co., in 1870. In 1910, he was the Dead Recorder in the county office.
