90 Michael RICKARD, d. bet 31 Jul 1809 and 28 Oct 1811, m. 2 Jun 1797, Berkeley Co., WV, (91) Elizabeth SHINDLER, b. c1777, d/o Conrad SHINDLER (182), Sr., d. Aug 1854, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA. There is a Michael RICKERT bpt. 27 Apr 1758 in York Co., PA, s/o Jacob and Cartarina RICHERT, sponsored by Michael DIFFENBACK and Anna Maria his wife. The age and time fits this Michael, and it places him in the same vicinity as the SHINDLERS in the 1760s and 1770s.  Michael RICKARD was a whitesmith and was in Shepherdstown by 1775. He wrought the escutcheon of the great door not St. Peter's Church in 1795. In 1810 Michael was in Shepherdstown with 2 males 10-16 (Elijah, ?), 1 male 45 and up (Michael), 1 female 0-10 (?), 1 female 10-16 (Mary), 2 females 16-26 (?, ?), 1 female 26-45 (Elizabeth). He made locks, hardware, guns, and small implements of unforged metal. He supposedly invented the screw lock, a peculiar caliper shaped lock which can only be opened by screwing a key in place. For many years these locks were used by the B&O Railroad for switch locks and were later made by Elijah and James RICKARD. The handcuffs used on John Brown were made by Michael RICKARD. . On 6 Apr 1810 Michael and Elizabeth sold to William Reichstine and wife Elizabeth for $190 lot 157 in Shepherdstown. On 14 Apr 1810 Michael RICKARD was given a clear title from the heirs of Conrad Byers for lot 7 on German Street in Shepherdtown, a lot he bought from Byers on 29 Dec 1801. His will was written on 31 Jul 1809, and probated 28 Oct 1811. On 18 Aug 1812, Elizabeth was named in a deed between the descendants of Conrad SHINDLER Sr. and Jacob Sensabaugh, when lot #112 for in Shepherdstown was sold to Sensabaugh for #133.30. Elizabeth SHINDLER previously was married to a JACKMAN, and had a son Elijah JACKMAN. This child changed his name to Elijah Jackman RICKARD. WILL: Michael RICKARD: written 31 Jul 1809, probated 28 Oct 1811; left entire estate to his wife Elizabeth as long as she remained a wodow, and for the care of her children. If she remmaried the estate was to be sold and equally divided between the children: Polly, Nancy, Eliza, and my wife's son Elijah JACKMAN. John Baker, neighbor was appointed executor; witnessed by Jacob Sheetz, John Pierce Jr., and Jacob Sheetz. (WVJEB22 Bk1 p653)

91.1 Elijah Jackman RICKARD, b. 27 Mar 1795, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA (adopted by Michael RICKARD), s/o Elizabeth SHINDLER (and her first husband), d. 11 Jun 1879 (12 Jun in Death Record) age 77, m. Elisabeth LEVICK, b. 1798, d. 10 Sep 1862. On 25 Nov 1816, Michael Fouke for $150 sold to Elijah RICKARD household goods from the estate of Michael RICHARD. Elijah RICKARD  in 1830 had 2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10; 1 male 10-15; 1 male 30-40; 1 female under 5; 1 female 10-15; 1 male 30-40. In 1840: 1 male under 5; 2 males 10-15; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 2 females 5-10; 1 female 20-30; 1 female 40-50. Jefferson Co., WV. In 2850 through 1860 Elijah was a whitesmith, and 1870, a blacksmith. In 1870, James T. HARP, a blacksmith, and Bettie E. HARP 16, their grandchildren were in the household. 91.1a Elisabeth Ann RICKARD b. 17 Sep 1819, VA, d. 24 Jun 1900, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV, m. 23 Sep 1840, Van S. HARP b. 1817, VA, d. 1867, Shepherdstown. In 1850 through 1880 the family lived in Sheperdstown. Van was a tailor in 1850, and in 1860, a clerk. In 1870 and 1880 Elizabeth was a widow with some of the children in the household. In 1900 Elizabeth was living with her daughter, Mary Adeline KEPLINGER in Shepherdstown. Van and Elisabeth Ann, plus their children Josephine, Van R., John W., James T, and Robert E are buried in Elmwood Cem., Shepherdstown. (BR16, WVJE12-16, WVJEB15) Children:

91.1a7 Mary Adeline 'Ada' HARP b. Mar 1857, VA, d. 22 Oct 1922, Shepherdstown, WV, m. 1885, Charles David KEPLINGER b. Jul 1852, VA, d. 1933, Shepherdstown. In 1900 Charles was a lawyer living in Shepherdstown with Ada's mother, Elizabeth HARP, and her brother John W. HARP in the household. In 1910 Charles is listed as a carpenter, with Ada's brother John  and her aunt, Maria RICHARD in the home. They and their son are buried in Elwood Cem., Shepherdstown. (WVJE16-17,. 91.1c John Leland RICKARD, b. 26 Sep 1825, WV, d. 20 Oct 1905, m. Mary E. MINCHEN, b. 21 Mar 1831, d. 3 Jan 1882. Two children d. in infancy. In 1860 and 1870 John was a whitesmith or dry good  merchant in Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV. Om 1960 Mary was a milliner. In 1870 Rebeca Richardson 17, a servant, and Sarah MINCHEN 52, possibly Mary's mother were in the home. (BR16, MDWAB2, WVJE15-16, WVJEB4, 9) Children:

91.1c2 Sallie RICKARD, b. 22 Apr 1856, d. 14 Nov 1936, m. 1887, Benjamin C. UNSELD, b. 18 Oct 1843, d. 19 Nov 1923. In 1900 they were living in Shepherdstown with John RICKARD, Sallie's father, where Benjamin was a musician. They are buried in Elmwood Cem., Shepherdstown, WV. (MDWAB2, WVJE16, WVJEB4) Children:

91.1c3 Thomas L. RICKARD, b. 5 Jun 1858, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, m. 12 Nov 1884, Elizabeth MILLER b. Jul 1859, MD, d/o Michael MILLER of Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. Thomas attended Shepherdstown schools, and Normal School (now Shepherd University. In 1888, he bought a fruit farm in Berkeley Co., WV. He moved to Hagerstown in 1889, where he was engaged in a wholesale and retailing business of fruit cases, packages, and baskets. He and his wife were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. From 1900 through 1930 they were living in Hagerstown. In 1900 Frank MILLER 35, his brother-in-law, his wife Ella R. 31, and child Hellen 5, and Michael MILLER, his father-in-law were in the home. In 1920 and 1930 Frank and Ella MILLER are still living in their household. They apparently had no children of their own. (MDWA2, 15-18)

91.1d James R. RICKARD b. 21 Feb 1828, VA, d. 26 Aug 1909, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV. In 1880 through 1900 James was whitesmith or locksmith living in Shepherdstown. In 1880 his sisters Mary Ellen and Maria Adeline HARP are in the household, as well as Eliza HUMRICHOUSE 74, their aunt. In 1900 Maria is in the home. James never married. He is buried in Elmwood Cem., Shepherdstown. (WVJE15-16, WVJEB15)

91.1e Mary Ellen RICKARD b. 16 Mar 1830, VA, d. 12 Feb 1888, unmarried in Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV. In 1880 she was living with her brother, James T. RICKARD in Shepherdstown. She is buried in Elmwood Cem., Shepherdstown. (WVJE15, WVJEB15)

91.1g Maria Adeline RICKARD b. 22 Dec 1834, VA, d. 11 Oct 1920, unmarried in Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV. In 1880 and 1900 Maria was living in Shepherdstown with her brother James T. RICKARD. In 1910 she is living with her niece, Ada KEPLINGER in Shepherdstown. She is buried in Elmwood Cem., Shepherdstown. (WVJE15-17)

90.3 Eliza RICKARD, b. 1808, m. Samuel HUMRICHOUSE, b. 5 Jun 1801, s/o Peter and Mary (HANDLEMAN) HUMRICHOUSE. In 1880 Eliza was living with her nephew, James R.
