152 Lewis NEILL, b. ____probalby IRE, (his parents (304) are unknown), grandson of William NEILL (608) d. 1775, Frederick Co., VA, m. c1737, Frederick Co., VA, (153) Lydia HOLLINGSWORTH, d/o Abraham and Ann (ROBINSON) HOLLINGSWORTH (306/307). Lewis NEILL, in 1730, left Lurgen, IRE, with his two brothers, John and William, landing at Philadelphia, and first settled in Lancaster Co., PA. In the company of a number of Friends, they (Lewis, John, and William) migrated to Frederick Co., VA, where Lewis settled on the banks of the Opequon Creek (now in Clarke Co., VA) at a point known as Burnt Factory. He lived in a cave until he built a house, and soon added a large grist mill. He was engaged in the mercantile business, trading in PA, and is said to have dabbled in slaves. In 1743, he was appointed Justice of the Peace. In 1746 he was on the rent rolls in Frederick Co. for 250 acres, and in 1750 he was on the list of landholder. He was commissioned sheriff of Frederick County on 19 Apr 1751. He became quite wealthy, owning large estates, mills, and other property. At his death, his possessions were estimated at forty-nine thousand acres of land and current money totaling two or three hundred thousand dollars. He attended Hopewell Church in his latter years, but there is no record that he ever joined. Lewis and his brothers were members of the Friends in IRE, but they did not bring their certificates with them, and apparently did not join the organization in America. He worked as a mason helping to build Hopewell Church, and was buried in the churchyard cemetery. (FH8 p175-183, VAFRB2, 3 p204, VAFR10 Bk 4 p316) Children:

608 William O'NEILL/NEILL-This William NEILL joined the Society of
Friends at Caven, IRE, in 1656. He dropped the "O" from his name, and
was thereafter known as William NEILL. He is the grandfather of the three
immigrant brothers, Lewis, John, and William, who migrated to PA, then to the
Shenandoah Valley because of persecutions they suffered for their beliefs as
members of the Society of Friends. According to Jolliffe, these NEILLS
were descended from the Royal House of Ulster, Hugh Boy O'NEILL. There is more
information in Jolliffee's, Historical Account of the Jolliffe Family, p175.
Nothing more is known about this William NEILL. (FH8 p176)
