Both are buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown, WV. 'Merce'  MYERS farmed  most of his life in Berkeley Co. His farm was located in the Swan Pond area, between Shepherdstown and Martinsburg, a few miles east of Rt. 45. Earlier in his life, he had worked as an electrician, wiring houses. He grew up near Bedington on the farm of his father which bordered on the Opequon River. As a child, he use to ride with father on a wagon load of grain, to the Cumberland Valley Railroad Depot in Halfway, MD, which was located on U. S. Rt. 11, a few yards south of the present day Bower Ave. He also told of driving a wagon loaded with barrels down to the Potomac River in the fall, where they would seine fish from an old Indian fish pot. These fish pots were supposed to have been built by the Indians, and were dams of rocks across the river in the form of a 'V', with a deep hole centered in the vertex. They would drive the fish down the river into the deep water, then net them, place them in the barrels, and salt them down to eat during the winter. When the river is low, one of these old pots can be observed just north of the I81 bridge south of Williamsport. A favorite sport Merce engaged in his younger days was joisting. It involved riding a horse at a gallop, and with a 6-7 foot lance, spearing a suspended ring about the diameter of a quarter. This is the state sport of Maryland, and at one time could be observed at the Mountain State Forest Festival in Elkins, WV. Merce also played the fiddle for dances in his younger days, and at one such event met his future wife,  Cecelia or 'Ceil'. She grew up in Martinsburg as a child, and when married was full time homemaker. One of her goals in life was to live  to see her grandchildren graduate from high school. In the end, she lived to see all of all of them graduate from high school, some graduate from college, and two of her great grandchildren graduate from high school. In 1910 through 1954 they were living on the farm in Swan Pond District, Berkeley Co., WV. They retired in 1954 from the farm and moved to a small house in Pikeside on U.S. Rt. 11, south of Martinsburg, where they were near their son Kenneth.
