16 Joseph MORROW, b. 25 Jan 1809, Frederick Co., MD, s/o James and Sarah (HARTSOCK) MORROW (32/33), d. 15 Jun 1882, Summit Point, Jefferson Co., WV, m. 1st. 15 Nov 1832, Jefferson Co., WV, Sarah Ellen (Eleanor) LOCK, b. between 1800 and 1810, d/o John LOCK. She d. between 1840 and 1850, in Jefferson Co., WV, burial unknown. He m. 2nd., 1 Apr 1852, Jefferson Co., WV, (17) Mary Ann DOWNS, b. 6 Apr 1814, VA or MD?, d/o Benjamin? and Ruth C. (WARK) DOWNS (34/35), d. 22 Feb 1881, Summit Point, WV, of pneumonia, age 67. Both are buried in Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town, WV. There were 4 children by the first wife, and three by the second. Joseph MORROW was born in 1809 in Frederick Co., MD. His name first appears in a list of Sunday School participants in the Presbyterian Church in Gerrardstown (then Middletown), Berkeley Co., VA (now WV). The family had moved there between 1810 and 1820. They then moved down the valley south of Winchester to the vicinity of the other Middletown, in Frederick Co., VA. By 1832 he marries his first wife, Sarah Ellen LOCK., and appears in the Jefferson Co., Property Tax List in 1834 and 1835, taxed on 1 white male over 16. In 1836 he was taxed on 2 white males, one being himself, the other probably his younger brother, F. B. S. MORROW, who migrated to Clark Co., MO by 1840 where an older brother, H. T. MORROW lived. Joseph and Eleanor lived at WHITE HOUSE FARM in Summit Point. She was the daughter of John LOCK, and their is some indication that the families had prior contact while living in Maryland. (Another family connection: who was Lizzie Leach?) By trade, Joseph was a blacksmith and farmer, and possibly a butcher by the number of butchering tools listed in his estate account. He also must of had some success in buying and selling property, as can be seen by the number of land transactions in which he was involved. He appears to have been well educated for the time, by the number of estates he was appointed executor of, both in the family and out of the family. In the 1840 census, there were 3 males under 5 (John J., Joseph R., and William H.), 1 male 15-20 (unidentified), 1 male 20-40 (Joseph), 1 female under 5 (unidentified), 1 female 5-10 (Rebecca), and 1 female 30-40 (Sarah Ellen). By 1850, his first wife had died, and he married Mary Ann DOWNS. They lived at White House Farm in Summit Point, WV, a small town, nine miles west of Charles Town and were there the rest of their lives. In 1870, Ida E. FOREMAN, Rebecca's daughter, Albert B. REID, a music teacher, son of Mary's sister Margaret, Benjaminm Botts a black laborer, Judith Berry a black domestic, and Florence Ranson a domestic, were in the home. In 1880, Ida E. FOREMAN, Arlington MORROW, a grandson and son of Joseph Randolph MORROW, and Annie Locke are in the household. The White House had belonged to the LOCKS and Joseph bought it from his first four children who had inherited it from their deceased mother. It was eventually passed on to R. W. MORROW (1853-1900) and wife Lilly Muse WALTON MORROW. It is interesting to note that the first physician in the Shenandoah Valley, Dr. John MCCORMICK an ancestor of Lilly MORROW, built this house, and it became her property 150 years later. Joseph and Mary lived here until their deaths. During the Civil War, a skirmish ensued across the road at the spring house. A union major and five troopers were killed in the battle. Joseph MORROW and his daughters, Kate and Josephine , had been standing out beside the fence talking to the Confederate troop when the Union soldiers attacked. This episode was recounted in Jefferson County Camp, UCV, Military Operations in Jefferson Co., WV 1861-1865. Mon. Oct. 6, 1862, one poor fellow died and just as his brother came up with an ambulance to take him away as he had heard he was sick at Mr. MORROWS. The family of Joseph MORROW had spread far and wide as you will see, except for the sons, Joseph Randolph and R. W In the 1880 census, it states that Joseph MORROW'S mother was b. in IRE. There is a persistent story that some members of the HARTSOCK family were born in Ireland. At some point, the HARTSOCK family emigrated to the colonies, and along the way the ship was wrecked on the coast of Ireland, where one or two members of the family were born. The story has been repeated in several documents, but the compiler feels certain with the information now printed in the HARTSOCK history, that it was not Joseph's mother, but a member of an earlier family. More research needs to be completed to document or undocumented this story, whatever the case may be. Furthermore, the person interviewed in the 1880 Census, many be referring to Joseph MORROW'S grandmother, Margaret HILTON which is much more likely. 16.6 Mary Josephine MORROW, b. 1856, Summit Point, WV, d. ?, m. Thomas DALE, b. 1864, Melbourne, Australia, British Vice Consul to Chihuahua, Mexico, d. 1938, Chihuahua, Mexico. Josie was missionary to New Mexico, but where and when she met and married Thomas DALE is not known. At the time of death of sister-in-law Lilly MORROW, she took in two of the minor children, William Hamilton and Mary Neill MORROW. After the death of Thomas DALE, Josie seems to have disappeared. A great deal of energy has been expanded to find her, but to no avail. We do know that the compiler's name 'Dale' and the name of the son of Mary Neill (MORROW) CAMPBELL came from this man we know very little about. Before her death, Josie sent to William Hamilton MORROW of Hagerstown some jewelry, including a gold watch with diamonds, and an opal ring. It isn't clear, but either W. H. or his wife, Reika sold the opal ring, because they were supposed to bring bad luck. In an interview with Mrs. D. W. LOOMIS, nee Esther Carol YOUNG, of Deer Park, Garrett Co., MD, d/o Mrs. E. W. YOUNG, Deer Park, MD, c1986, she stated that Josie DALE is supposed to have relocated and died near Elisha LOCK. Elisha LOCK was supposed to have been in Willow Grove, Howell Co., MO. A check of Missouri Death Records did not prove fruitful. Mrs. LOOMIS' mother Mrs. E. W. YOUNG called my grandfather, Cousin Ruthvan, and was a near relative through the LOCKES. Actually she was a cousin to Joseph MORROW older children through their mother Eleanor LOCKE. A recent newspaper article from the Canberra Times in Australia indicated Thomas DALE met with a tragic death, when at Chihuahua he was accidently shot when a revolver fell out of the pocket in his pants and exploded as he slipped while descending some stairs. 16.7 Emma Katherine 'Katie' V. MORROW, b. 1857, Summit Point, Jefferson Co., WV, d. ___?, m. 13 Apr 1882, in the M. E. Church, Summit Point, WV, Ernest R. CRUTCHER, b. 20 Mar 1858, Nashville, TN, s/o William H. & Mary C. (FOSTER) CRUTCHER, d. 7 Jan 1948, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA. He was cremated. Emma Kate was a resident of Jefferson Co. when they married and Earnest was a resident of Louisiana, MO. After their marriage, they moved to Louisiana, Pike Co., MO, where Ernest was in practice as a doctor. He had boarded with William Hamilton MORROW,(16.4) Emma Kate's half brother, in 1880, where he probably met Aunt Kate. Ernest graduated from Main Street High School in Nashville in 1877. In 1876/76 he was a reporter for the Nashville Evening Banner. He studied medecine under Dr. T. A. Atchinson at Vanderbuilt University graduating in Mar 1879. He practiced first at Arcola, _________, MO, under his brother Dr. R. M. CRUTCHER. In 1879 he entered Homoeopathic Medical Center in St. Louis, graduating in May 1880, and the following Apr he located in Louisiana, MO. The 1880 census has him there in the summer of 1880, not 1881. By 1886, they moved to Great Falls, Cascade Co., MT, were there in the 1900 census, and then sometime in 1900 (obituary of R. W. MORROW 1853-1900 #8). They moved to CA. From a grand niece in MO, a letter states that Ernest was a Mason in Masonic Lodge in L.A., and that her uncle worked with the son (William Hamilton CRUTCHER) of Ernest and Kate in a factory during the war. A letter to Elizabeth BUSEY in 1928 from Kate gives the impression that she was teaching in a girl's academy. 2005: New information has come to light though the census records. In 1910 Kate is living with son David in Morrow Co., OR. In 1920, Earnest CRUTCHER is living alone at 1618 Toberman Street, Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA, and Kate his wife, is living with her daughter, Ruth, at 412, Cowper Street, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, CA. It would appear on the surface, that Kate and Earnest were living apart after 1900. They were members of the Methodist Church South. Ernest belonged to the Knights of Pythias and a Mason (CALA7, CANP1, CAR1 Cert. # #9848, CASC7, FH1, MOPIB1, ORMW2, O3, PIC5, WVJE1) Children:
