28.5 Sarah Ann MILLER, b. 1852, Berkeley Co., VA, d/o John William and Mary (MCALLISTER) MILLER (28/29), d. 19 Jul 1940, Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD, m. _____, Lucas APPEL, b. 1849, s/o Samuel and Theresa APPEL, d. 1934, Cumberland, MD. Both are buried in Old Norborne Cemetery, Martinsburg, WV. In the 1870 census of Berkeley Co., WV, Lucas and Sarah were living with her sister Barbara LIGHT and her husband, Joshua LIGHT, next to John W. MILLER in Hedgesville, Berkeley Co., WV. The date is not known, but at some point, they moved to Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD, probably because Lucas worked for the B&O Railroad in Cumberland. At that time, employees and their families could ride the B&O free of charge. The compiler's mother related this story about, "Aunt Sallie" who used to come down to Martinsburg to visit every summer. On one such return home, she walked in the house, and her husband, Lucas, said, "Why didn't you stay longer?". She didn't say a word. She picked up her suitcase, walked back to the train station, and went back to Martinsburg for two weeks. They left a large family of descendants in the Allegany Co., MD area. When the compiler's father was a Methodist minister, between 1936 and 1940, in Burlington, Mineral Co., WV, about 30 miles from Cumberland, "Aunt Sallie", would occasionally visit the family.  Most of the APPEL record was compiled by Margaret Marie APPEL KAYLOR, Severna Park, MD. She also had at the time a large file on the APPEL ancestors. The compiler has augmented the material with some census and cemetery records, duly cited. (O2, 6, PI12, 23, 50) Children:
