are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery in Shepherdstown, WV. In 1820 Albert was in
Shepherdstown with 1 male 0-10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 3 females 0-10, 1
female 16-18, 1 female 16-26, and 1 person in commerce. In 1822, Albert
was elected an alderman in Shepherdstown. In 1823 he bought property from Thomas
Stevens. In 1825 he entered into a trust with Joseph Crass. In 1828 he entered
into another trust with William _____?; and in 1829 a trust with Henry Berry. In
1830 he bought property from Jacob HILL.. In the 1830 census he was living in
Shepherdstown with 1 male (15-26); 1 male (30-49); 1 female (15-20; 1 female
(20-30); and 1 female (40-50). In 1831 he sold property to Margaret Kearsley. In
1833, he began operation of a stage line that ran between Shepherdstown,
Charles Town, Jefferson Co., and Winchester, Frederick Co., VA, then to Romey, Hampshire Co.,
WV. Another source
states this line ran to the Ohio River, but probably not HUMRICHOUSE'S
line. On one of the trips from Winchester, VA, to
Shepherdstown, the stage was involved in an accident, that killed the driver,
Albert Post HUMRICHOUSE, s/o of Albert and Elizabeth. A passenger on this
stage, Henry Clay, was on his way from Kentucky to Washington. He later
wrote a letter of condolence to the parents of the driver. In 1839 Albert was a
boatman on the Potomac River and the C&O Canal for the Packett Company. In
1844 he bought property from Elizabeth Perry. In 1850 Albert was living in his
son-in-law, Grandison T. LICKLIDER (20).
In 1854 he was elected assessor. During the Civil War,
Albert HUMRICHOUSE opened the Confederate Post Office in Shepherdstown.
Daniel S. Rentch was appointed Post Master, but the office closed after a year,
due to harassment from federal troops who took over the town. In 1860 Albert had

42.2 Albert Post HUMRICHOUSE, b. 12 Mar 1814,d. 6 Jul 1834. Albert was a driver for his father's stagecoach line. He was killed in a stagecoach accident near Brucetown, Frederick Co., VA, hauling Henry Clay, traveling from Kentucky to Washington. Clay wrote a letter of sympathy to the parents which was in the possession of the family but probably was lost over the generations. There is a copy of the letter in the HUMRICHOUSE source FH9. Albert is buried in the Lutheran Cemetery, Shepherdstown, WV. (FH9, WVJE4)

William received his undergraduate degree in the Classics from University of Michigan in 1892, and a master's degree in 1893, then taught Greek and Latin until 1902. He also taught at Missouri Wesleyan College, _____, and Garret Biblical Institute, Evanston, Cook Co., IL. In 1898 and 1899 he studied Greek and Latin in Rome. He worked part time in academic libraries, leading to a career in improving the quality of library science. From 1902 through 1907 he was the librarian at Princeton University in Princeton, Mercer Co., NJ. From 1905 to 1915 he was superintendent of the reading room at the Library of Congress. In 1915 he became the Director of Michigan Libraries , University of Michigan, and there created a library science degree. In 1918 and 1819 he was president of the American Library Association. During WWI he along with the YMCA he provided soldiers in the armed forces books and library services through temporary camp libraries. In 1910 they were living in Washington, DC, with Mary E. In 1936 he joined the law firm of Root, Clarke, Butler, and Ballentine in New York City. From 1936 through 1938 he lectured on politics at Princeton University, Princeton, Mercer Co., NJ. In 1939 he became an assistant legal advisor at the U.S. State Department. In 1947 he was visiting professor on International Law at University of Pennsylvania. In 1948 he became a professor of International Law at UMI, retiring in 1876. During his career he held many position in International Law: legal advisor to the U.S. delegation to the Council of Foreign Ministers at the Paris Peace Conference in 1946; guest lecturer at eh Hague Academy of International Law in 1961 and 1965; 1975 to 1981 member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the Hague; active member of law associations and editorial boards of journals; vice-president of the American Society of International Law 1960-1961, honorary vice-president 1969-1982 and 1984-1987, and honorary president 1982-1984; editor-in-chief of the American Journal of International Law 1953-1955 and 1962-1970; co-director of International Legal Studies at Michigan Law School 1958-1876; held UMI Distinguished Professorship Award 1966-1976, and was named professor emeritus; authored the leading law school casebook on international law 1950s through 1970s, International Law Cases and Materials. 42.5 Margaret Catherine HUMRICHOUSE, b. 30 Aug 1818, d. 28 Jan 1896, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., WV, age 77y 4m 12d, m. 1st. James W. PENDLETON. James and Margaret went westm probably Arkansas, where her children were born. After his death, she m. Franklin WHITE, probably in Arkansas, and had a son Henry WHITE, and daughter Mary Elizabeth. Henry WHITE, drowned in the Potomac River 14 Jun 1866 where he had gone to "bathe". It was the custom to take clean clothes to the river for an evening bath. Benjamin S. PENDLETON, CSA, was a courier to Stonewall Jackson, and went west as a young man, but returned to Shepherdstown and entered business. Albert PENDLETON, CSA, member of Stonewall's Brigade, was killed at the First Battle of Bull Run. Daughter, Mary Elizabeth, d. in 1926, lived on the old HUMRICHOUSE property in Shepherdstown. In 1860 and 1870 Margaret and her children are living with her father Albert HUMRICHOUSE; in 1870 with the children Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth. In 1880 he was a retired merchant and continued to live in Shepherdstown through 1920, and probably until his death in 1931. In 1900 his sister 'Lizzie' was in the household.
