66 Henry HARTSOCK
, b. c1741, Raritan, Somerset Co., NJ, s/o Peter and Anna Margaretha (KONES) HARTSOCK, d. 22 Jun 1812, Frederick Co., MD, m. 1766, Frederick Co., MD, (67) Mary MOYER/MYERS, d. 23 Mar 1816, Frederick Co., MD, d/o John MOYER/MYERS. The graves have not been located. Henry was a farmer. The family was members of the German Reformed Church in Frederick. The births of the children were recorded in German in the family bible dated 1766. Henry is listed by the Committee of Observation of Frederick Co., MD, 27 Dec 1775, as an associator returned from the war. Four brothers, Nicholas, George, William, and John were also listed. On the 20 Aug 1787 he was executor of his father-in-law's will. On 23 Mar 1779, Henry bought for 8 pounds, a tract of land called 'Surveys on Wood Lot' of 100 acres. On 11 May 1792 he bought from Joseph McDonald for fifty pounds a tract of land of 174 1/4 acres named 'Better Than None'. On 18 Dec 1794 he bought a tract of land from the estate of Thomas Usher for 346 pounds 15 shillings and 2 pence at a sale. The 1800 Census shows 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 1 male 45 and up, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 45 and up, and 5 slaves. On 22 Apr 1802 Henry and others sold to Benjamin Musgrove for 500 pounds a tract of land called The 'Addition to Brook's Discovery'. His will named all the children except Elizabeth, who may have died without heirs. (FH2, MDFR16, 20, MDFRB46 G2 p247) Children:

WILL: Henry 16 May 1811, Book 1 p311, Executor Joseph HARTSOCK; William HARTSOCK 10 pounds currant, and property; Sarah MORROW 250 pounds, and Negro boy, Peter; granddaughter, Mary MUMFORD, 50 pounds; three sons John, Joseph, and David equal division of the disposed estate; Joseph appointed executor; witnesses; Robert Cumming, George Coleman, and Christian Wagner. (FH2, MDFR15)
Note: The HARTSOCK book (FH2) may have incorrectly identified the wife of Henry HARTSOCK. In a will dated 20 Aug 1787, John MOYER/MYERS of Frederick Co., MD, names his daughter Mary HARTSOCK, and names his son-in-law, Henry HARTSOCK executor of his will. In the HARTSOCK material (books, deeds, etc.), there doesn't appear to be any other Henry HARTSOCK who fits the age of Henry above that could be this son-in-law. I have not found a marriage for Henry to either woman.  It seems more plausible that Henry HARTSOCK would have married someone of German stock, rather than a HOWARD who were apparently English stock . There is also supposed to be a 1766 bible record for Henry with the birth dates of his children. I have not been able to find this bible, which in 1938 was owned by a couple in Carroll Co., MD. This bible may also have a marriage record which would give us the name of his wife, ending the mystery. More research. (dwm)

66.3b2a Carey V. SELLMAN b. c1859, MD, may have m. a CLINTON?. In 1920 and 1930, her brother Charles H. HARTSOCK was living with Walter and Hallie BANKERD, whom they called uncle in the census record. Walter's parents are known, leaving Hallie to be the daughter of Carey, providing they used the term 'uncle' in the correct context. Based on that assumption, there were two daughters in the 1910 census (parents are not present) living in Linganore, Frederick Co., MD. Unfortunately you can barely make out the name of the sister in the 1910 census, who was 23, and the head of household. It could be CLINTON.
