316 John HAMILTON bpt. 11 Jun1708, d. 1773 s/o (632) an unknown HAMILTON, and grandson of Gavin and Abigail (HAMILTON) HAMILTON.(1264/1265) , m. 1st. bef. 21 Dec 1734, Jacobina YOUNG, d/o John YOUNG (634) from Lanark; m. 2nd, 21 Sep 1761 Barbara MURDOCH, d/o Thomas and Elizabeth (COCHRANE) MURDOCH from Cumloden and had several more children. John moved from Kype to Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland. and was a descendant of the HAMILTONS of Kype, landowner in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was a lawyer and clerk to the legality of Mauchline. Another source describes him as a practicing attorney and writer of the Signet. About 1730 he was appointed clerk to regality at Mauchline. He bought the tower known as Castle of Mauchline, later sold it to the Earl of London, then leased it back. On 2 Apr 1732 John and Jacobina were rebuked at the kirk session for their irregular marriage, and had son Gavin baptized He left an estate to a son Alexander of 5200 pounds in real estate and 3400 pounds in debt due him, incurred by John Semple, Glasgow merchant to whom John had advanced credit. The estate was handled by John TAIT (probably the same John TAIT who m. his 2nd. wife's sister) a Scottish lawyer in Mauchline. After the death of John, Barbara HAMILTON, with younger children, moved to Havieston, Lanarkshire, Scotland, near John TAIT, and her sister, Charlotte TAIT. 316.4 Alexander HAMILTON bpt. 3 Nov 1741. Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland, d. 30 Jun 1799, Prince George's Co., MD. Alexander was a wealthy merchant in Bladensburg, Prince George's Co. He settled in Prince Georges prior to or before 1768. In 1768 he became an assistant factor in Somson, Baird, and Company's store in Piscataway, Prince George's Co., MD. It was managed by James Brown of Glasgow. The store merged with James Brown & Co., Glasgow, and Alexander became the factor (an agent in charge of selling merchandise assigned to him) of the Piscataway store. On 29 Jul 1777 James Hoggan left 1/2 dozen silver spoons and a silver tea tongs marked ITI (these items were given to John Alexander 'Jacky' HAMILTON in Alexander's will in 1799), and all of his books to Alexander; Alexander was also named executor to settle accounts with James Brown and Co. of Glasgow, money owed Mrs. James Brown Sr., and Mrs. Bridget Leeckman both of Glasgow, money owed to them. In 1777 Alexander planned to complete the business as a factor for James Brown and return to Scotland because of the Revolutionatry War. He didn't leave probably for several reasons. Part of the estate of his father John HAMILTON involved the debt owed by John Semple now in Dumfries, Prince William Co., VA. Protection of the debt was secured by title to an iron forge and flour mills on Occoquan Creek in Prince William Co. Another security for the debt involved Keeptriste Furnace run by his brother Francis at Harpers Ferry, Jefferson Co., WV, and over 3000 acres of a land tract 'Merryland" across the river in Maryland. The Keeptrist Furnace constituted the foundation stone for the establishment of the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Alexander fled to Keep Triste, now the estate of his brother Francis, in 1777, probably to escape his patriotic neighbors who resented his neutrality during the revolution. After the war many of the creditors who had escaped payment to the company now considered Alexander a foreigner causing him problems in collecting debts, not to mention James Brown and Co., in Scotland, who also considered him a foreigner because he was now an American. In 1790 Alexander had 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females and 5 slaves. On 6 Feb 1792, he witnesses the will of Robert Wade. In 1793, Robert Ferguson and Alexander were assessed for a tract of land "Dunghill" 142 acres, "Magruder's Purchase" and "Magruder", and "Beall's Honesty" 301 acres in Montgomery Co., MD. On 19 Nov 1794 he witnessed the will of Nathaniel Hatton and on the 27 Mar 1795 the will of Mary Hatton. On 3 Mar 1798, Alexander HAMILTON of Prince George's Co., MD, and Robert Furgeson and Mathew Blair, of Charles Co., MD, witnessed the will of Robert Lanson of Charles Co. The will was filed in Fairfax Co., VA. On 30 Feb 1804 Henry Hardey left land, part of "Gardner's Meadow", called "Indian Fields" he purchased from Alexander Hamilton to his wife Mary Ann Hardey. His will probated 31 Jul 1799 is an important document in identifying HAMILTON family members. Besides identifying his father, his sisters and a niece in Scotland, he also identifies the children of Francis HAMILTON of Jefferson Co., VA; i.e. Elizabeth HAMILTON, Jacobina REED and a niece Margaret REED in Scotland, John Alexander HAMILTON, Thomas HAMILTON, Gavin HAMILTON, Jacobina HAMILTON, Magdalena HAMILTON, and Francis HAMILTON. There is no record of marriage or children. Considering that he named and left most of worldly possessions to his brother's children, he probably had none of his own. Alexander's letters concerning his business in Maryland can be seen in the following issues of The Maryland Historical Magazine. These letters were gleaned for family connections. They are a part of an article on the tobacco trade in Maryland and would be very interesting to someone studying that trade.

His house was behind the kirkyard at Mauchline, adjoining the Castle of Mauchline. Gavin was a lawyer who went into practice with his father but eventually opened his own office. In 1783, both fellow masons, Gavin met Robert Burns, the Scottish Bard and they were friends for the rest of Gavin's life. Hamilton like Burns, "was a liberal minded moderate, who preferred moral works to Calvinist othodoxy and strict sabbatarian discipline and against the rigidly orthodox with their Calvinistic insistence on original sin, election, and predestination". In 1784 Robert and his brother, Gilbert, rented the 118 acres Mossgiel Farm from Gavin for 90 pounds a year. In 1785 the kirk session at Mauchline accused Gavin of being absent from church in Dec., and 3 times in Jan, of setting out on a journey to Carrick on the 3rd. Sabbath of Jan., and other offenses. He appealed the decision of the session to the Synod of Ayr and Glasgow, which found in his favor. In 1786 when Burns accepted a job as a plantation bookkeeper in Port Antonia, Jamaica. Burns not having money for passage to Jamaica, Gavin HAMILTON advised him to publish his poems. in 1787. Burns traveled to Haverieston, where he spent time with the Chalmers family, and visited Gavin's half siblings. He wrote Gavin, describing the half-brother William and half-sister, Charlotte. On his second visit, Burns proposed to Margaret Chalmers, d/o Gavin's step-mother's sister, who rejected his proposal. In 1788 Margaret m. Lewis Hay.
