158.1f Eleanor 'Ellen' HAMILTON b. 1810/11, VA, d. Mary 1886, age 75, Darke Co., OH, d/o John Alexander and Eleanor (PHILPOT) HAMILTON (#158.1), m. Rudolph RYAN b. 1802, VA, d. 1847, Darke Co. Rudolph spent his early life in MD, coming to Darke Co. in the 1830s, where he practiced the trade of shoemaker. On 12 Apr 1848 in the Common Pleas Court of  Darke Co., Francis L. HAMILTON, Eleanor's brother was chosen as guardian of the minor children; the document giving the ages of all nine children: Mary 13, John R. 11, Emily A. 10, George W. 8, Frances L. 8, Eliza Jane 8, Daniel H, 4, William 2, and Elizabeth P 1 year. In 1850 Eleanor is a widow living in Darke Co. with the nine children. There are some minor differences in the names between the common pleas list and the census list: Eliza Jane is not in the home in 1850; John R. is John A; Gavin is George W., Elizabeth is Pamelia E. in the court document and Amelia in her brother Frank's bio. In 1870 and 1880 John was farming in Jackson, Darke Co., OH, In 1900 John and his second wife, _____?, age 64, were living in Greenville, Darke Co., with his son Leroy. John and his second wife had been married 7 years. (OHDA5-7, OHDAB32 p52) Children:

158.1f1a Lemote THORN  b. Jan 1854, VA, m. 1880, Minerva _____? b. Feb 1858, OH. In 1880 through 1910 Lemote was farming in Jackson Twp., Darke Co., OH.  In 1900, daughter Vasa O. is living in the household. She had been married 1 year to a MILLS. In 1910 the census indicates one of these children died, excluding Opal who is in the home in 1910. (OHDA6-8) Children:

158.1f1b Leroy THORN  b. Apr 1855, OH, m. 1876, Alice R. _____?, b. c1858, OH, d. aft 1885, and bef. 1903. In 1880 and 1900 Leroy was farming in Greenville Twp., Darke Co., OH. In 1900 his father John W. and his 2nd. wife, _____?, are in the household. (OHDA6-7) Children:

158.1f2 John R. (or A.) RYAN b. c1837, MD. John enlisted for three years in the 94th. Ohio Vol. Inf., was wounded and captured at Chattanooga, TN, by the Confederates. He was supposed to have died in Libby Prison in Richmond, VA. Nothing was ever heard from him after his capture. (OHDAB30 p317)

158.1f4 George W. RYAN b. c1840, OH. In his brother's bio he was supposed to be in Miami Co., OH in 1900. (OHDAB30 p317)

158.1f5 Francis 'Frank' L. RYAN b. 3 Mar 1840, Darke Co., OH, d. bef. 1920, m. 26 Jan 1865, Darke Co., by Henry Cole, Mary E. POTTER b. Oct 1842, OH (or IN), d/o Daniel and Catherine (CUMERINE) POTTER from Darke Co. He served in Co. K, 34th Oh Vol. Inf. for 3 years. He was in the battles of Wytheville, VA, Cloud Mountain at Strasburg, Shenandoah Co., VA, and twice at Cedar Creek, and Winchester, Frederick Co., VA. He was captured at Winchester on 24 Jul 1864, but escaped and made his way to Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., WV. He was mustered out at Columbus, Franklin Co., OH on 13 Sep 1864. He returned to Darke Co., bought 62 and 1/2 acres in Greenville Twp., where he farmed. They were members of the Coleville Christian Church. Frank belonged to Jobes Post GAR, and the Horse Thief Protective Association. In 1880 through 1910 they were farming in Greenville Twp.. In 1900 Agnes and Frank RYAN, their two grandchildren were in the home. In 1920 Mary was a widow and saleswoman in a department store living in Harrison, Darke Co., with Colatta McDowney 16, a roomer in the home. (OHDA6-9, OHDAB13, 30 p317-218) Children:

158.1f5b John D. RYAN b. Jan 1867, OH, m. 1st. _______?; m. 2nd., Flora E. DUNKER b. c1876, OH, d/o _____? and Barbara DUNKER. In 1900 through 1920 John was a widower and traveling salesman or clerk in a clothing store, living in Dayton, Montgmery Co., OH. In 1900, his two children were living with their grandparents in Darke Co. In 1910 the children are in the home again and John is remarried. In 1920 Barbara DUNKER 73, b. GER, William DUNKER 46, Flora's brother, and her sister, Murell DUNKER 38, are in the home. (OHMG9-11, OHDAB30 p318) Children:

158.1f5d Minnie P. RYAN b. c1873, OH, m. 1894, William APPENZELLER b. c1872, OH. In 1910 and 1920 they were living in Greenville. William was a mill worker in a basket manufacturing business. They had a child that may have died in infancy. (OHDA8-9, OHDAB30 p318)

158.1f5e Eliza Jane RYAN b. 1842, OH, m. 1865, William POTTER. Elizabeth Jane, only 8 years old was not in the home in 1850. In 1870 William was farming in Greenville Twp., Darke Co., OH, with Francis Scott 18, a farm laborer in the household. In 1880 through 1910 they were living in Loda, Reno Co., KS. In 1910 they reported 7 children, 6 living. It appears that Phebe A. POTTER was not one of their children, and may have been William's child by another marriage. Sep 1843, Darke Co., OH, d. 14 Feb 1923, Front Street, Greenville, Darke Co., age 79y 5m 5d, m. 5 Mar 1868, Darke Co., by John Noggle, JP, Catherine BUTT b. 3 Jun 1850, OH, d/o 25 Dec 1929, 120 South Street, Greenville, age 79y 6m 22d, d/o Otto BUTT. He enlisted 24 Aug 1862 in Co. F. 94th. Vol. Inf., and participated in battles at Perryville, Stone River, Chickamauga, Louisville, KY, Missionary Ridge, and Lookout Mountain, was with Sherman in GA, and discharged at Columbus, Franklin Co., OH in 1865. In 1870 through 1920 they were living in Darke Co.; in 1870 through 1880 Neave Twp; in 1900 through 1920, Greenville. In 1880, Benjamin BUTT 18, a nephew was in the household. In 1929 Omer and Fred paid Miller Funeral Home, Greenville, Darke Co., for their mother's burial. In 1910 and 1920 Omer was farming and operating a dairy farm in Greenville Twp., Darke Co. In 1910 and 1920 Owen was farming in Darke Co.; in 1910 in Twin Twp., and in 1920 Jackson Twp. IN 1920 Elizabeth VanCorsey 16, b. OH, was a foster child living in the home. (OHDA8-9, OHDAB6)

158.1f7f Raymond Fredus 'Fred' RYAN b. 19 Feb 1887, Darke Co., d. 9 Oct 1948, Wayne Hospital, Greenville, Darke Co., age 61y 7m 20d, m. 22 Feb 1905, Darke Co., by Rev. W. K. Albright, Mary Ethel NEVELL (NEVILLE) b. 1888, OH, d/o John Mitchell and Elizabeth Jane (MARTIN) NEVELL. In 1910 and 1920 Raymond was farming in Greenville, Twp., Darke Co. In 1920 John M. NEVILLE, Mary's father was living in the home. In 1920 Fred and his brother Omer paid Miller Funeral Home for their mother's burial. Fred and Ethel are buried at Emanuel Graveyard, Coleville, Darke Co. (OHDA8-9, OHDAB6, 26)

158.1f8 William T. RYAN b. 1846, OH, enlisted in the 152nd. OH Vol. Inf, and died in the hospital at New Creek, Mineral Co., WV. (OHDAB30 p317)

158.1f9 Elizabeth P. (Permilia E., Amelia) RYAN b. 1847, OH, m. c1867/68 John D. GRIFFIN b. c 1846, MI, s/o George GRIFFIN from CT.. In 1900 they were supposed to be in Nebraska. Amelia's name in different depending on which documents you read. in 1870 they were in Greenville, Hancock Co., IN, where James was a day laborer. In 1880 they were farming in New Harrison Twp., Darke Co., (INHN5, OHDA6, OHDAB30 p317) Children:
