In 1825 William bought from his brother-in-laws, Michael and John HILL, a house and lot in Shepherdstown, left to them by their mother, Catherine HILL, property she inherited from her father Michael YEASLEY. John HILL was in Hardin Co., KY. From available records, they lived in Shepherdstown. In the 1850 and 1860 census, his occupation is listed as a painter and glazer. William, with one of sons, is supposed to have glazed the windows at Ferry Hill Plantation at one time. His death record states his occupation as pauper? However, the bible record does not indicate he had any sons. The Boteler heirs on 13 Feb 1841, sold to William BOWEN, part of lot #30 in Shepherdstown, for $1, all rights to property sold to Willaim BOWEN on 2 Aug 1821, which William BOWEN and Henry Boteler bought from F. Elizabeth was educated at Gettysburg Seminary in Gettysburg, Adams Co., PA. He migrated to Jefferson Co., VA, then to Waynesboro, in 1848. He was a Knight Templar. He was engaged in construction of the C&O Canal at Harpers Ferry, Jefferson Co., in public works at Natural Bridge, the James River and Kanawah Canal, built the C&OR Railroad west of Waynesboro, was an engineer on the Blue Ridge Tunnel. In 1863 he ran the blockade in his own boat from Wilmington, NC, to Nassau, and to England to buy supplies for the Confederacy. They lived at 'Rose Hill', near Waynesboro, Augusta Co. In 1870, Charles M. and Hugh Lafferty Jr., were living with their brother, William Bowen. In 1880 Hugh Jr., his wife and daughter are living in the home, along with Mrs. D. D. Virginia Calvary, CSA on the staff of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at the Battle of Bull Run and Manasses in 1861, then in charge of a tannery which produced leather for the confederacy. In 1870 through 1910 they farmed and lived in South River Twp., Augusta Co. In 1870 Charles M. GALLAHER 21, Hugh S. GALLAHER Jr. 16, S. G. McGuire 26, a carpenter, Margaret Howard 4, Thornton Whiting 29, a farm laborer, and Mary Carter 50, a servant were in the household. In 1879, William Sr. entered into a deed of trust with J____ Baumgardner. In 1910 Juliet Hite was a writer for a magazine. Eleanor was a trained nurse, and William B. Jr., was a civil engineer. In 1920 Juliet was the head of the household, with William B. Jr., Frances, and Thomas B. in the home. In 1930 Juliet has Thomas B. and Frances B. in the home. He was a mason and they were members of the Presbyterian church. They are buried in Riverview Cem., Waynesboro, VA, along with their children, Thomas Briscoe, Julie Hite, Eleanor Magrudrer, and Frances Amelia. The was author of "Baron Jost Hite, First Settler of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia", "The Weird History of Clipp House", "Historic Charle Town and Sheperdstown", "History of Waynesboro, Virginia and Historic Spots in the Vicinity", Easter in Jerusalem", and "Ante-Bellum Yuletide Customs and Drinks". She was eligible for many of the patriotic organizations of the United States: United Daughters of the Confederacy, Colonial Dames of America, Daughters of the American Revolution, Order of Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, Ark and Dove Society, and Genealogist of National Society of Colonial Descendants of America, plus other organizations, both religions and secular: Democratic Committee of Waynesboro, Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, Red Cross, American Legion Auxiliary, Presbyterian Church, and She is buried at Riverview Cem., Waynesboro. He was eduated at Georgetown College, the University of Virginia, and Heidelberg University in Belin, GER, in 1863. He enlisted in Co., E., 1st. VA Cav., was aide-de-camp on the staff of Gen. John D. Imboden, a courier for Gen. J. E. B. Stuart, and in 1865 was appointed to the staff of Gen. Thomas L. Rosser. After the war he was a lawyer living in Charleston, Kanawha Co., WV, where he was living in 1880, with Sarah Jones 30, and Pamelia Jones 20, servants, in the home. (US33, WVKN10)
46.1d Charles Maurice GALLAHER b. c1848, Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, d. 9 Jun 1873, of cholera, m. Minnie O. _____? b. c1868, WV. Charles was educated at Georgetown College, Hampton-Sidney College and Washington-Lee College. He joined the Confederate Army at age 16, and worked with his father (evidently in the leather tannery). After the war he settled in Charleston, Kanawha Co., VA. He was a Knight-Templar, a member of the Democratic Club, and the Episcopal Church. Either he or his wife migrated to Manhattan, Bronx Co., NY (NYC), where in 1910 Minnie, now Minnie Walker, a widow, was living with her two sons.
