The maiden name of Sarah, wife of Lawrence, had been elusive. She is reported in one document, as being a FITZHUGH. However, there is no proof, and the daughters of FITZHUGHS of the period have very few Sarahs that would have been marrying age at the time Lawrence would have been married. Lawrence BATTAILE was a large property owner evidenced by the appraisers appointed by the court to appraise his property in Caroline, Culpepper, Spotslyvania, Essex, and Orange counties in VA. After the death of Lawrence, Sarah BATTAILE sold to a horse, claimed by Thomas Roote to be the property of his wife, Sarah, was considered the property of the estate of Lawrence BATTAILE, not the property of Sarah ROOTE. Lawrence paid tax, 1782-1787 on 1 pole 43 slaves in Caroline Co., VA, and 1 pole 14 slaves in Spotslyvania Cop., VA. (VAB2 Vol. 41, p258-259, 11, VACA1-2, 5). According to court records, Lawrence and Sarah BATTAILE had 5 numbers; son Lawrence names two sisters which brings the number to 7: the two additional children may have been married and out of the home at the time of Lawrence's death.: Children:
