626). The children are named
from the will and a deed filed in Frederick Co., MD. He owned land in
present Frederick Co., MD, formerly Prince Georges Co. On 14 Oct 1730, Nicholas BAKER
received from his father-in-law, John BELL (or BEALL), a tract of land
called "Hazard". On 14 Oct 1732, he witnessed an indenture of William
Moore and Thomas Laeander. Nicholas was taxed in 1733 in Rock Creek Hundred in
Prince George's Co., MD, now a part of Frederick Co. On Mar 1739 and 22
Mar 1742, he leased "Bradford's Rest", 100 acres from Samuel Hyde, a
London, ENG, merchant for 4 shillings each. This deed names his wife Mary, sons
John and Bazel, and daughter, Margaret. On 3 Jan 1752, he recorded a stray
horse at his plantation in Frederick Co., and again on 17 Jul 1760. He bought on
25 Nov 1752, "Wolf Pit" and "Pig Pen" from John Lamar for 12
pounds, 10 shillings. In his will he gave these tracts to son Walter. In 1753 he
bought "Lost Hammer". He owed a tax debt in 1755 and 1756, for
"Hazard" 300 acres, "Thomas and Richard's Dispute" 233
acres, "The Lost Hammer" 400 acres, and "Wolf Pit" and
"Pig Pen" 384 acres. He sold to Elizabeth French in Calvert Co., MD,
on 16 Oct 1856, for 25 shillings English, 2 tracts named "Kenabas" and
"Ridges". He bought from Alexander Beall and Robert Beall, a
tract called "Bachelor's Forest" for 7 pounds, 18 shillings, 4 pence.
In the Rent Rolls of Frederick Co., 1760-1761, he is shown to be the owner of
"Baker's Choice". In Jun 1862, Nicholas and Charles Jones were
appointed to lay out roads and make a report to the court. He was a witness to a
land transaction for James Duley Sr., on 17 Dec 1763. He took part
in a boundary settlement on 29 Nov 1764. On 18 May 1772, he witnessed the will
of John Boyd. His will was probated on 26 Mar 1764 in Frederick Co., MD. (MDB2

312.1 John BAKER, in his father's will dated 26 Mar 1764 to receive
the land on which he lives, plus 100 acres adjoining both parts of
"Knave's Dispute" and "Ridges", also 20 pounds to paid in
goods and chattles. In 1767, John made an addition to "Hazard" of 44
acres. He had received this land in 1730 from his father and mother. On 13 Dec
1764, Richard Beall held a note against John BAKER and Thomas
Richardson. Also in 1767, he bought "Baker's Rich Neck", a tract of
55 acres. On 18 Jun 1767, he recorded a bond with brother Ignatius BAKER,
who either borrowed or owed him 100 pounds sterling, in which the court
ordered Ignatius to secure a good deed to a tract of land, "Tobacco"
to his brother John. He was witness to a note between Joseph Evans of
Frederick Co., and Nathaniel Magruder. On 2 Dec 1774, he witnessed the will of
William Williams. In 1779 John bought land bordering Peter Burr and Walter
BAKER'S land. This is probably the John BAKER who m. Judith Howard
WOOD, d/o William and Judith HOWARD, a granddaughter of the Duke of
Norfolk, and whose son John BAKER lived in Shepherdstown,

312.1e John BAKER b. 1769, Frederick Co., MD, d. 1823,
Shepherdstown, Jefferson Co., VA, m. 4 apr 1799, Ann MARK d. 1845, d/o John
MARK. John was a lawyer. He attended Washington College (now Washington
and Lee) in Lexington, Rockbridge Co., VA, 3 years. He studied law and was
admitted to the bar in Berkeley co., VA. He was a member of the State
House of Delegates 1798-99, and was one of the lawyers who defended
Aaron Burr when he was tried for treason. He was elected as a Federlist to
Congress, serving from 4 Mar 1811 to 3 Mar 1813. (see

Biographies). He was the Commonwealth Attorney for Jefferson Co., WV.
His buried in the Old Episcopal Church Cem., Shepherdstown, WV. (WVJEB5 p23)
312.2 Ignatius BAKER in his father's will received a tract of land
on Rock Creek called "Tobacco Bed" of 19 acres, and 100 pounds paid
in money and goods and chattels. He also received an extra 60 pounds of money.
On 18 Jun 1767, was bound to brother, John BAKER, for 100 pounds
sterling, which he either borrowed or owed, and was ordered to make over
a deed to John BAKER for the land called "Tobacco". (MDB6

312.4 William BAKER, received the land on which Nicholas, his father
lived, and a tract on Rock Creek called "The Lost Hammer" of 104
acres, plus 36 acres adjacent being a part of "Batchlor's Forest",
and 100 acres adjoining the plantation, plus 20 pounds currency. On 21 Jun
1760, William was on a commission to settle a boundary line. On 18 Jun 1761,
he bought from Henry FUNK, a tract of land ( unnamed in document) for 20 pcm
Maryland. On 14 Nov 1761, witnessed a deposition on a boundary setlement. On
14 Oct 1764, he bought from James Winder of Frederick co., and William for 60
pcm Maryland, a tract of land clled "Boys Harbour" on Antietam
